DT do Centro completes one year on January 25th with a positive balance of actions carried out in 2024
On the eve of completing one year since its creation, the Urban Tourist District of the Center (DT do Centro), created with the objective of recovering the protagonism and development of the central region, demonstrates effectiveness in the implementation of successful actions, programs and initiatives.
Since its launch on January 25th of last year, the actions have been coordinated by a group formed by public actors, such as the State Government (through the Public Security, Strategic Projects and Tourism and Travel departments), the City of São Paulo (through the Civil House, the Todos pelo Centro Program and the Sé Subprefecture) and representatives of civil society, including the Theatro Municipal, the CCBB, B3, the Commercial Association of São Paulo, Move Centro, the Pró-Centro Association, hoteliers, the tour guides union and associations representing 25 de Março and Santa Ifigênia.
In the development axis, projects such as Eixo SP, the terrace of the Martinelli Building, the renovation of Galeria Metrópole with new stores and designers, retrofits and investments in street shops and restaurants have become reality. Notable examples include the reopening of the traditional Café Girondino, with great public acceptance, and the inauguration of ventures such as Entrecôt do Olivier, in Praça da República.
In the area of security, the partnership between the State and the municipality, especially in public security actions, with the increase in police personnel and the implementation of an integrated camera circuit (Smart Sampa), the largest and most complete intelligent monitoring system in Brazil, brought back the feeling of security to downtown São Paulo. The system was launched in July 2024, under the responsibility of the Municipal Secretariat of Urban Security (SMSU) and helped in the arrest of criminals, prevented invasions of public facilities, among others. With the help of facial recognition cameras, 30 missing people were located.
In terms of accommodation, a hotel committee was created to develop incentive actions, such as free transfers to event centers and trade fairs in the capital. This resulted in an increase in the occupancy rate of downtown hotels. The initiative was evaluated as positive by 95% of the participants interviewed, with 78% stating that the offer of transportation to the Convention Center would encourage them to choose to stay in the downtown area.
For the Secretary of Tourism and Travel of the State of São Paulo, Roberto de Lucena, “the central region of São Paulo is undergoing a consistent process of revitalization, which is mainly due to the synergy with the municipality and partners that operate in the region”.
Investments for the Center of SP
Public-private partnerships and collaboration with civil society representatives have attracted investment to the central region. In December, Setur-SP hosted a meeting of the Management Council of the Urban Tourism District of Central São Paulo, attended by Vice Governor Felicio Ramuth, Secretary of Strategic Projects Guilherme Afif Domingos, Municipal Secretary of Tourism Rui Alves, entrepreneurs and guests.
During the meeting, the Tourism Economy Intelligence Center (CIET) presented a map of 203 new developments and 109 expansion projects in the Sé and República areas, representing private investments of R$1.7 billion. CIET predicts that, over the next three years, real estate launches and retrofits will add R$5 billion to the region's economy.
Another highlight was the announcement of a public call by the City Hall for the development of projects such as the implementation of the VLT (Light Rail Vehicle), the regulation of the Triangle and Quadrilateral Law with tax incentives (IPTU exemption and ISS reduction) and the promotion of events in the city center. The partnership with the State Government, involving the Municipal Guard and the Military Police, resulted in the installation of a 24-hour surveillance camera circuit in the central region.
Urban Tourist District of the Center
The creation of the Downtown Urban Tourist District on January 25, 2024, is part of a set of initiatives in partnership with the state government and the city of São Paulo to redevelop the city's central area. The district, a demarcated territorial area, is designed to attract public and private investment, offering economic, fiscal and credit benefits to increase the flow of tourists.
The model aims to create a safe and sustainable territory, with tourist corridors, active facades, new housing and jobs, benefiting both the local population and visitors. Its creation strengthens existing enterprises and encourages new businesses.
The initial perimeter of the Downtown Tourist District includes more than 50 tourist attractions, 60 gastronomic establishments, 76 accommodations and more than a hundred shopping and entertainment options. Highlights include the famous Historic Triangle of São Paulo, including Largo São Bento and Pateo do Colégio, themed shopping streets such as 25 de Março, São João, Ipiranga, General Osório, Santa Ifigênia and São Caetano, as well as listed facilities such as the Municipal Market and Vale do Anhangabaú.
